Taking the time to practise these techniques is an essential part of your daily routine. There is absolutely no substitute for the work you will do to condition your mind and body in preparation for birth. You cannot simply attend classes and hope that the conditioning will occur without your dedication to making it happen. Conditioning involves your mind and your body. A skier would never attempt to compete in a tournament unless his body was conditioned. A runner would never attempt to enter a marathon unless his body was conditioned.
While birthing should not be the exhausting, pushing-your-body-to-the-edge feat that athletes face, it nevertheless requires the same kind of discipline so that when the time comes, you are ready. Since you are conditioning your mind for ultimate relaxation, it is important that you form a pattern that your mind can automatically respond to when it comes time for your birthing. It is time well spent, and it can cut the time and the effort you will spend in your labour. As one who has been there, I can emphatically say that conditioning is a must. You can’t slough it off and hope that you’ll get lucky.
